Mental Support Options
In 2020 we are very focused on how we can best support women becoming mothers - especially those becoming mothers for the first time. My Midwives ‘Moving into Motherhood’ package offers support on a range of levels and with a variety of services designed to normalise this period of change and to ensure that women make this transition in the smoothest way possible.
As midwives we deal with many aspects of a woman's wellbeing, however our Brisbane My Midwives practice is entering an exciting partnership with Harmonious Minds to offer women a deeper level of support for their postpartum mental and emotional wellbeing.
Harmonious Minds, based in Nundah, offers a holistic approach to mental health and healing. Their use of integrative therapeutic methods considers the links between an individual's mental, physical, emotional, social and spiritual aspects of self. The counsellors, Angie and Katrina, specifically focus on women and highlight the transition to mothering as one of their key areas of interest.
The perinatal period has long been recognised as a period that can have a lasting (and often negative) impact on women's mental health. Changing hormones, sleep deprivation, the physical recovery after birth and the simple 'newness' of the responsibility of being a mother can all influence a woman's mental health, as well as how she experiences the postpartum period. The partnership between My Midwives and Harmonious Minds aims to provide some key practical strategies to help the new mother during this time of transition; including having a midwife available for home visiting in the period where the woman is developing confidence in her feeding and mothering skills. Some direction may also be provided on how to seek and obtain help from your partner and family in periods of fatigue or emotional distress. Strategies around integrating your views of mothering and the reality you are experiencing may also be shared.
‘Moving into Motherhood’ is available for pregnant women who are receiving care through any provider in the Brisbane region and can start any time during the last trimester of pregnancy (after 28 weeks). A workshop offers the first opportunity to connect with our team along with a small group of women at the same stage of pregnancy, designed to foster connection and community.
A range of services are available (for example, access to quality chiropractic care), and can be tailored to suit your needs.
